Tracey Weaver, Executive Director

Tracey Weaver, founded urban university after a decade of management and corporate training in the business sector.   While working to prepare homeless and marginalized adults for work, she recognized the need for training methods that addressed their unique employability experiences. Armed with training skills along with the personal experience of advancing within the business world as an African-American woman, Tracey decided to create a community based organization that would provide training and coaching services designed to help individuals reach their full potential at work and urban university was born.

In 1998, Tracey organized the launching of uu through its' first collaboration with the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF), to deliver the Legal Employment Action Program (Leap), a welfare to work initiative spearheaded by BASF's Volunteer Legal Services Program. Designed to help single mothers transition from public assistance into entry level positions, uu's contribution to Leap is its' highly recognized soft skills and professional development component, which shaped uu's training approach.   Now delivered through Jewish Vocational Services, uu remains to be the soft skills and case management component of this award winning program - resulting in the successful placement of more than 100 individuals in the legal sector with an average starting wage of 15.67/hour.

Another successful partnership includes uu's work with SF Works.   uu partnered with their OnRamp Biotechnology Training Program, designing its professional development training and coaching component.   Delivered from 2002-2006, this collaboration resulted in more than 65 low-income individuals transitioning into internships and full-time placements in bay area biotechnology organizations and companies.
